I have a 2000 540i M-sport 6-speed with 127,000 miles. It needs the same things from time to time as any car: gas, oil, new tires sometimes, and I just replaced the factory battery (which appeared to be brand new when pulled) and cost me about $150. It drinks a lot of gas compared to other cars, but it seems damn economical when your other car gets 8mpg, so I am a bit numb to it.

I have to say that 161,000 miles is a lot. I’d want to look and see who owned it or how it was cared for. I’m the 3rd owner of mine. The previous owner bought it from CarMax with 12k on the dial and got the extended warranty and had every single flaw fixed immediately by BMW and what I bought was essentially a brand new car. I’ve got a minor (and I mean super minor) power steering fluid leak. I just dump about 1/4 of fluid in every year because the $50 and two hours to fix it correctly has been too easy to ignore.

That car in the picture isn’t a M-sport though. It’d have black trim. I could be wrong, but I feel pretty confident that’s true of that year. However, the displays aren’t missing a bunch of pixels, so someone put some time in fixing/replacing that, and it looks quite nice.

Don’t buy it for more than $6500.

I should have looked it up first. They changed the trim on the M-sports to match the body color in 2001.
